INDEX

[5796] Notes:
40, p 253 His will, dated 25 Oct 1694, proved 11 Jan 1710/11, named Lydia and children James Browne, Jabez Browne and Dorothy Kent (wife of Joseph Kent, Jr.)

On ATBA list for 1643 in Taunton

40, p253.
James probably arrived at Plymouth with his parents in 1632, later becoming prominent among the second generation leaders of the colony. He was made freeman on 1 June 1658 along with his brother John Browne, Jr., both being called "Mr." On 10 June 1661 he was on a coroner's jury investigating the death of Robert Allen in Rehoboth (PCR 3:222). He became a selectman for Swansea on 7 June 1660, and on 29 October 1670 he was one of a committee appointed to dispose of lands and grant admission to new inhabitants of Swansea. He was a selectman again on 5 June 1671. On 23 April 1671 he was appointed to accompany Mr. James Walker and Mr, Roger Williams on a mission to King Phillip. He became an Assistant for the first time on 3 June 1673, a position to which he was elected many times. He married Lydia Howland, daughter of 1620 Mayflower passengersJohn and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland, and they had James, Jabez, Dorothy and Joseph; joseph probably died young as only the first three are named in their grandmother's will (Elizabeth Howland).

40 (110) "James Browne visited Philip [King] twice on 14 and 15 June [1671], to persuade him to be peaceful, and brought from the Plymouth Council an "amicable frindly letter to Phillip therin shewing our dislike of his practices"=8A

Research:
On 10 June 1661 he was on a coroner's jury investigating the death of Robert Allen in Rehoboth (PCR 3:222). Who was Robert?

per MAYFLOWER INCREASINGS by Susan Roser

!SPOUSE-DEATH: Mayflower Descendants, 7:166.
