2 CONC fascination for grafting.  His sense of justice and duty are atteste to 
2 CONC by the story that he once forwent a day's hunting (a considerable 
2 CONC sacrifice in medieval times) in order to hear the suit of a humble 
2 CONC petitioner.  He devoted his long reign to modernizing the realm of 
2 CONC Scotland.  Realizing that wealth was the key to power, David encouraged 
2 CONC trade and commerce by insisting on a uniform system of weights and 
2 CONC measures, minting a standard coinage at Berwick and
2 CONT  Roxburgh, and establishing a number of royal burghs.  Although there is 
2 CONC some evidence that the jury system dates from Davis's reign, most law was 
2 CONC administered by the king in person or by his local representatives.  When 
2 CONC he died, he controlled a well-ordered Scottis
2 CONT kingdom which extended farther south than it had ever extended befor , or 
2 CONC since.

2 CONC King of the English (1016).  In 1015 Eadmund desired to marry Ealdgyth, 
2 CONC the widow of a Danish Earl named Sigeferth.  His father did not want him 
2 CONC to make this marriage with a Danish woman, but Eadmund married Ealdgyth 
2 CONC none-the-less.  This angered Cnut, a Danish leader, and he made war on 
2 CONC Eadmund.  This war between Cnut and Eadmund lasted over a year until the 
2 CONC latter's death.  Some authorities state that Eadmund was slain by Cnut's 
2 CONC men, while others claim that he died a natural death.  Edmund was chosen 
2 CONC king by the people of London, but Canute II, King of Denmark, who was 
2 CONC leading an invasion of England, secured the support of the council 
2 CONC (witenagemot) at Southampton and of Edric (d. 1017), Ethelred's 
2 CONC son-in-law.  Edmund met the Danes in battle, winning several engagements 
2 CONC and relieving Canute's siege of London.  He was defeated at Assandun (now 
2 CONC Ashington), however, through the treachery of Edric, who had pretended to 
2 CONC desert Canute.  A truce was arranged between Canute and Edmund; Edmund 
2 CONC was permitted to rule the south of England until his death later in the 
2 CONC year, when it reverted to Canute.

2 CONC the West Saxons and Kentishmen, it was said that Ethelwulf was Bishop of 
2 CONC Winchester and it was known that he was educated there.  In 825 his 
2 CONC father sent him to gain the Kingdom of Kent by war, and Ethelwulf soon 
2 CONC subdued this region and placed it under his father's rule.  Like his 
2 CONC father, Ethelwulf had to fight off the invasion of the Scandinavians.  
2 CONC His success against them was not as great as his father's, for Ethelwulf 
2 CONC lacked the power and the energy to conduct long wars.  When the Danes 
2 CONC invaded London, in 842, he did little to stop them.  The invasion of the 
2 CONC Norsemen encouraged the Welsh to rise against their conqueror in 853, but 
2 CONC they were soon defeated by Ethelwulf's trusted followers.  Soon afterward 
2 CONC he defeated the Norsemen at Ockley.  To celebrate his victory, Ethelwulf 
2 CONC decided to go on a pilgrimage to Rome.  In 855 he left England and at 
2 CONC first went to the Court of Charles the Bald, King of the Franks, who 
2 CONC received him with many honors.  At Rome he was received by Pope Leo IV.  
2 CONC He made a large number of valuable offerings to the Pope and promised a 
2 CONC yearly payment to the See of Rome, which is said to have been the origin 
2 CONC of Peter's Pence.  Returning to England by way of France, he was married 
2 CONC to his second wife by the famous bishop-historian, Hincmar of Rheims, and 
2 CONC he died two years after his pilgrimage.

2 CONC Normandy saw his chance for a successful invation of England.  He built a 
2 CONC fleet, attracted many knights, and obtained the pope's blessing.  He 
2 CONC gained victory at the Battle of Hastings and was crowned King of England 
2 CONC on Christmas of 1066.

2 CONC redistribution of land in England.  Saxon rebellions led to the

2 CONC Succeeded his father in Neustria, the western part of the kingdom, while 
2 CONC his brother, Carloman, held the eastern part.  They both kept the time of 
2 CONC mayor of the palace, and were the actual rulers of the country.  They 
2 CONC appointed Childeric III, probably a Merovingian, as king, but presided 
2 CONC over tribunals, convoked councils of the church, and made war themselves. 
2 CONC  Carloman abdicated and retired to a monastery in 747.  Pepin was thus 
2 CONC sole master of both Austrasia and Neustria, and after consulting Pope 
2 CONC Zacharias took the title of king.  He was crowned by St. Boniface in 751 
2 CONC and later was recrowned by Pope Stephen II, who also made him a Patrician 
2 CONC of Rome.  In return for these favors Pepin made two expeditions against 
2 CONC the Lombards.  He took the exarchate of Ravenna from them and conferred 
2 CONC it on the Pope.  This marked the beginning of the Papal States.  After an 
2 CONC eight year war he occupied Aquitaine.

2 CONC Macbeth in 1054.  During his reign he carried on almost constant warfare, 
2 CONC most of which was successful.  He gave support to his brother-in-law, 
2 CONC Eadgar Atheling, in fighting William the Conqueror in Northumbria.  In 
2 CONC 1072 William invaded Scotland and succeeded in a temporary conquest of 
2 CONC the country, returning to England after Malcolm did homage.  Later, in 
2 CONC 1091, Malcolm raided Northern England, in return for which William Rufus 
2 CONC invaded Scotland and once more Malcolm did homage.  In 1092, when in 
2 CONC Gloucester, England, he declined to do homage and returned to Scotland in 
2 CONC anger.  He invaded Northumberland in 1093, but was ambuscaded near the 
2 CONC Castle of Alnwick and slain.
